Or, at least, a linear recounting of events. The sets may be lush and the costumes sublime but the principal purpose of these theatrical displays is to tell a story.Concept musicals do not necessarily tell a story and they do not follow a linear progression from beginning to end. Their purpose is to explore a theme and/or convey a message.Such shows emerged as a genre apart in the 1960s; a time of great social upheaval in the US.Audiences were growing tired of the ever-more formulaic fare offered up by the likes of Rodgers and Hammerstein (The Sound of Music, The King and I), one of the preeminent musical theatre writing teams of Broadway’s Golden Age.Likewise, Learner and Loewe (My Fair Lady, Camelot) made a name for themselves by setting stories to music, generally with the same topics (love a nd righteousness) and the same happy, feel-good mood.To say that these stories did not mirror the social climate at the time would be a gross understatement.As a result of seemingly repetitive storylines, theatre attendance went on a slow decline. It wasn’t until 1961 when The Fantasticks debuted off-Broadway that interest in such theatrical performance was renewed.In the same year, audiences were treated to Stop the World â€" I Want to Get Off!, the oddly prescient tale of Littlechap, a man who is never quite satisfied with his life. For both of these shows, the theme was reaching emotional maturity… if such a thing is possible.Those shows did not narrate a story as much as they presented a series of anecdotes strung together, bringing a new flavour to the musical stage.While these two shows firmly established the concept musical as a legitimate formula for the American musical, the genre didn’t truly take off until nearly a decade later, with the production of Hair, a raucou s demonstration of the hippie culture so pervasive at that time.Hair was the very anathema to polite society.This revolution in stage shows broke away from the traditional ‘shiny, happy’ style of musical theatre seen in shows like Singin' In The Rain or Mary Poppins. It opened the door to a new generation of playwright, Bob Fosse and Stephen Sondheim among them.Still, it wasn’t until A Chorus Line, widely accepted as the quintessential concept musical, that the word ‘conception’ was used in any show’s billing.  By the mid-70s, the concept musical was a fait accompli.Now, we review some of the more renown shows…How does the concept musical differ from revue musicals?Cabaret, a Political StatementSet in 1931 Germany, Cabaret explores the seamy underside of life at the Kit Kat Klub, underscored by a doomed romance between a Gentile and a Jew as the Nazi party strengthens its hold on Germany.This musical’s origins are convoluted. John Masteroff found inspiration for his book in a play titled I Am a Camera and a book called The Berlin Stories, written by Christopher Isherwood.He melded both stories into a show with rather dark undertones, for which John Kander wrote the music and Fred Ebb wrote the all of the song lyrics.While the narrative focus is on American Cliff Bradshaw and his relationship with British cabaret singer Sally Bowles, happenings at the Kit Kat Klub serve to remind the audience of the chilling political developments of the time.Book musicals go by many names; see how many you know! It came to the attention of composer Leonard Bernstein; soon Stephen Sondheim was recruited to write the lyrics for all of the songs.Gangs were a relatively recent social phenomenon, as were open expressions of malcontent and resentment of immigrants.While the team had proposed a collaboration a few years before that ultimately fell through, now all of the elements were coming together to tell a story that would satisfy all of its creators. The group set to work.The resulting show remains a standout among Broadway musicals, winning multiple awards and has played on the most illustrious stages around the world.Ironically, for a story t hat was meant to be of forbidden love between members of rival ethnicities, fans and critics alike consider the affair between Tony and Maria only incidental to the overall message that people should just get along.Did you know that the original show, choreographed by Jerome Robbins, had a longer run in London than on Broadway? Would you venture a guess as to which jukebox musical claims that title?Fiddler on the Roof and Sweeney ToddBefore we discuss the next musical on our list, let’s examine these two popular shows.Both of them are record-setters as well as trendsetters. With Cats, he ventured into the realm of fantasy, giving us arguably one of the world’s most popular songs, Memory.He would go on to write other blockbusters such as The Phantom of the Opera â€" which premiered even as Cats still commanded large audiences worldwide.Most importantly, we should note that, of all of Baron Lloyd Webber's productions, Cats changed musical theater. No longer would concept musicals be the norm; people were sick of being preached to. Nadine:The University of Denver campus is quite small, so transportation never seems to be an issue. I personally longboard around campus, and many of my friends bike, but you can get from one side of campus to the other with a 15-minute walk. Students are given free RTD passes, which enable us to use any form of city transportation (i.e. buses and the light rail), but it is honestly unnecessary unless you are living very far from campus. University of Denver is located on the outskirts of the city. It is a very safe campus, but a 15-minute light rail ride can take you right into the heart of Denver. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Nadine:The professors and advisers I have had so far have been very available. If you email with a question, they will undoubtedly respond within 24 hours. If you are looking to meet during hours outside of their normal office hours, they are more than willing to work with you and to find a time that suits you both. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Nadine:Although I currently live off-campus, I thoroughly enjoyed my dorm experience. Living in the dorms is a great way to socialize with new people, but there are also plenty of clubs and organizations that one can become involved withI have also made a large amount of friends through my club involvements. There are two main dining halls, which serve a variety of food, as well as a few other places to each at, such as Subway or the late-night pub. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported?What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Nadine:University of Denvers Daniels College of Business is by far the most represented and supported here; many students come here specifically to study Business. However, I am currently double-majoring in Spanish and Communications. I chose these two majors because I am genuinely interested in them, and I know that I will choose a more specific subject related to teaching when I get my Masters degree. Although the main focus is Business, University of Denver supports all majors, and it even has an opportunity where you can create your own. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Nadine:Because I was very involved in clubs, club sports, and my Living and Learning Community, it was very easy to meet new people and make new friends. I would say that as long as you are willing to put in the effort to try new things, you will be successful in finding compatible friends. About 20% of students at University of Denver are involved in Greek life. I have many friends who enjoy it, but I personally decided not to be a part of it, and I have never felt my social life has suffered because of that choice. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Nadine:Although I have limited experience with the Career Center, the few times that I have visited were very helpful. The counselor I met with provided me with advice on applying to certain internships, and she goes out of her way to inform me of company opportunities that I may be interested in. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Nadine:I spend a lot of time in our library, which was built about two years ago. The library is beautiful and very spacious. There are multiple floors with varying silence levels. During midterms and finals, the library becomes much more crowded than usual, but there is never a problem finding a quiet place to study and get work done. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Nadine:We are very fortunate to have Denver very close to our campus. It is a very unique and spacious city with a lot of opportunities. Some choose to go downtown for various reasons, but there are many choices around the general campus in terms of restaurants, bars, etc. If there is something you are looking for that is not near University of Denver, I am sure you will be able to find it with a quick ride on the light rail. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Nadine:The undergraduate population at University of Denver is around 5,500, which I believe is the perfect size. It is small enough where you are always running into someone you know, but also large enough where you are always meeting new people too. I have been very pleased with my class sizes so far. My largest class, which was a general science class, had about 60 students, and my smallest class had about 8. This year, my largest class has been about 25 students. I am very happy with the class sizes here. It was a large factor in picking University of Denver for my undergraduate education. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Nadine:For my Freshman Seminar Class, I took a course called Revolutions and Revolutionaries in Latin America, which I very much enjoyed. The professor was absolutely wonderful, and I learned a tremendous amount. One day in the spring, I was with a friend throwing a Frisbee around before our biology class, and my professor and his friend saw us and joined in. We played for about 15 minutes together, discussing random current events and joking around. I do not believe that at many schools I could have a close connection with a professor like this. I believe that the professors genuinely enjoy what they teach here, and it makes it much more enjoyable to be a student when the professor is passionate about what he or she is here for. Here are a few signs that a student may need one-to-one, personalized tutoring: The student is just getting by. Some struggling students fly under the radar because theyre not failing and theyre not overly troublesome, yet they frequently miss important concepts and have a hard time keeping up. Students like this are often slow to finish work and constantly seem overwhelmed. The student has become despondent or angry. If the student is unusually moody or unhappyon top of being disengaged in classit may be time to investigate whats going on. This is especially concerning if the student previously had an optimistic disposition. The student is highly disorganized. No student is perfect when it comes to keeping things neat and orderly, but if you have a student whose disorganization interferes with learning on a regular basis, some targeted attention to study skills improvement could help. It probably won’t be long before you find that your mind is looking for another challenge. Fortunately, there are many activities out on the web just suited to keeping your mind in shape. Here is a list of tools to keep your mind in shape. 1. Online courses at Coursera Online courses are available, at little or no cost, that cater for the student like you who is on a long vacation. Coursera, for instance, is a website that acts as a face for many colleges and universities. It lists on its website 4-week long courses that take place at holiday time. The range of specializations is vast, from almost any language to business courses, all types of computer science specializations and courses from the sciences, mathematics, the humanities and practical arts disciplines. A typical 4-week course offered in July by the University of Maryland at College Park is called “Developing Innovative Ideas for New Companies: The First Step in Entrepreneurship”. This is a great introduction to the budding entrepreneur who wants to kick start a business after graduating. The University of California in San Diego puts on a       summer course that is suited to students who believe they haven’t fully mastered learning techniques. It is called “Learning How to Learn” and its aim is to provide the potential learner with powerful mental tools that will assist in the mastering of tough subjects. 2. Online Couses at UdaCity If you have the time available a great way of keeping your mind in shape is to complete a mini online course. At UdaCity, you will find what the website calls “nanodegrees. These are quite long and can take 6 months or more but are in an exciting range of subjects and may be complementary to what you are studying at college or university. 3. Writing skills with Penzu Do you usually spend some of your leisure time writing a personal log or diary about events in your life and your current thoughts? Are you sometimes afraid that someone may get their hands on this very personal document? If you want to have a bit more fun and create an online personal log that is secret, you can sign up with Penzu for your free journal creator. It has some useful features such as the ability to search for past entries which is so much faster and neater than using the old fashioned paper journal. If you are the sort of person that would love to remember to write entries regularly but you forget, Penzu sends you gentle reminders by email. You can compile a journal for different aspects of your life such as a food log or one describing the dreams you have as well as a study log. Penzu provides templates but you can customize the whole layout yourself. 4. Online plagiarism checker made easy with Unplag Now, let’s move on to the subject of next semester’s essays. When you are collecting and compiling long essays for assessment, there is always a large amount of information accessible on the internet. It can be tempting just to copy and paste large chunks of information straight into your essay. Universities don’t allow this, for good reason, as it’s not your personal work. Most essays are checked carefully for plagiarism, and you will be penalized if your essay contains a significant amount of copied text. Fortunately, there is an online plagiarism checker called Unplag you can use at a minimum of cost that can check your essay for plagiarism. You simply load your essay into the box and click. All in all, summertime is a time you can pick and choose what you do.
